Work-Life Balance…the one goal that once attained will bring bliss and joy abound. All will be right in the world. I love reading quotes associated with this concept. Perhaps my favorite is “Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.” This is great. Easy to remember. Easy to understand. Nearly impossible to achieve. Why is that? How can it be that a concept that is seemingly so simple to understand is so difficult to implement?
Over the years, I have had this discussion with many small business owners. Overwhelmingly, I hear comments like “If I don’t do it, it doesn’t get done”, “If I want it done right, I have to do it myself”, and “I need help, but I can’t afford to hire an experienced employee”. Small business owners often complain that they can’t devote as much time to doing the thing they went into business to do as they would like because they are spending too much time struggling with accounting activities. Many even admit they dislike accounting and are not confident that they are doing everything right.
Perhaps they feel this way because they are not trained accounting and tax professionals.
I feel strongly that individual taxpayers and small business owners are misled by the developers of low priced off-the-shelf accounting and tax preparation software who would have them believe that the software is so easy to use that anyone can do it competently. This is like saying that buying a pipe wrench from the local hardware store somehow endows me with the necessary skill and knowledge to be a plumber. Ridiculous…right?
It seems to me that many small business owners do not achieve a work life balance because they spend much of what should be their “free” time performing activities, usually at night and on weekends when their businesses are closed, that they do not enjoy, diverts their attention from the business purpose, and adds no value to their lives.
So I ask you….Do you have a work-life balance? If not, give us a call. After all, life is too short to be unbalanced.
